Sam Malin is based in Madagascar where he heads Avana Resources which is developing natural resources projects, in particular gemstones and gold. Sam is also Chairman of Frigate Exploration which is pursuing oil and gas opportunities in the Western Indian Ocean and East Africa. He sold his previous oil company, Avana Petroleum along with its assets in the Seychelles and Kenya, to Vanoil Energy in March 2013. He is a director of Avana Industrial Minerals which is developing high quality flake graphite mines in Madagascar. Sam is also the Founder of Madagascar Oil and Red Island Minerals. Madagascar Oil was sold to a combination of private equity and investment fund investors whilst Red Island Minerals was purchased by Thailand's PTT. Sam has worked on origination, development and financing of oil and gas, energy and mining projects worldwide with a particular focus over the past 20 years on sub-Saharan Africa. Earlier has was an advisor to the European Commission and worked with Standard & Poor's/DRI, Arthur D. Little, and Dome Petroleum. Sam is Canadian and grew up in Victoria and Terrace, British Columbia. He speaks on TV (e.g. Malagasy TV, Sky Business News, CNBC Europe) and on radio and is also a contributor in print. Beyond natural resources, Sam acquired geneaological company Burke's Peerage - founded in 1826 - and is driving its expansion beyond its Victorian heritage into 21st century businesses. In addition to his native English, Sam is fluent in French and conversant in several other languages. He is registered as a professional engineer with APEGA, holds an honours degree in Geological Engineering from from Queen's University in Canada and undertook graduate studies at the University of Cambridge.
